While most of the year round residents in Slab City are older, there are some younger people as well. Most of the residents have at least one dog - often 3 or 4 - for protection. Living in a squatter community can be dangerous at times, especially when people run out of money at the end of the month, and when they first get paid at the beginning. The heat exacerbates everything.
